Oh my goodness..I have found my twin..it's the mishaps...missed exits..and general mayhem that is my greatest adventures ..eventually..and most aggravating frustrations...until I learned to laugh at the absurdities and freak timming...it is obviously part of my DNA ..and it's the stuff my best stories are made of..thank you for reminding me to lighten up and laugh.
Based on the title, I had to stop and read this. Darned funny, if you ask me. "...more than half of my stories were inspired by mistakes and mishaps, " And that's the truth in my experience, too!
Omg, has it been a year or two since I last read your articles/stories/posts?
I love this.. and clearly your writing has improved. I dunno how or in what way -- all I know is, it goes straight to my heart, again once more, like kindreds.
I am glad you didn't "die" for this story.
Though as lovers for writing, might it not be an "honor" to "die for our stories"? hahaha.
Adds drama and entertainment, which isn't what people these days want? haha.
Great story! Interested to know if you have any story structures / tools you use (like hooks ect) or is it a case of just writing what comes to mind? Also how did you personalise the blue divider / breaker thing please! I really want to make my own
Thanks Jordan! I'm more of a free-willy kind of writer, not much structure. However, I'd like to get to a point where I do have more structure. Kind of like you. It seems you really plan your content well.
I created the divider in Canva. I have a premium account but I'm sure you could make one with the free version too. If you hop into Canva, the image size to create a divider that displays well is 3000 px by 600 px. And save it with a transparent background. Let me know if you figure it out or if you need a hand with it. I think the free version has plenty of options.
Excellent writing and I think it resonates with most on some level. It reminds me of a couple of "awkward" experiences that could have gone sideways. One involves waking up in the pre-cell phone era in a very dark basement with a very full bladder and no flashlight handy. The other to do with locking one's self out of one's dwelling, very under-dressed in the very cold Canadian winter. Luckily both problems were resolved without embarrassment, just long moments of internal turmoil.
I can totally relate to being locked out in Canadian winter!! It never happened at home but I've locked myself out of a running car before π This was back in the no cell phone days as well.
I was taken aside by the police in Malawi because I had too much leg showing. boobs would've been okay, legs not. This was many years ago. Hastings Banda was prime minister at the time. Oh, the memories. Should I write about it!
In Turkey, power went off at various intervals, and so too did the water. Often for hours without warning...cuz where's the fun in that?!
The odd part was the the water tank of the toilet was behind the wall with no access to the common layperson. How the hell did they fix their damn toilets?! There was no way to add water after flushing. :S
So yeah, this aspect of no water was fun.
And washing dishes?! Or preparing food? Good luck π€
Great post. Puts me in mind of when the lights on my ancient Land Rover failed while I was driving cross country in the dark in Ecuador, before mobile phones were in use. An interesting experience.
π²π² Oh my God, I seriously would have had a panic attack. I used to shut my headlights of for a second just to see how dark it really was on those roads.
Made me want to travel π
Check all the windows while you're out there

Well if this is also what your life is like, you can count me as a follower ππ I love stories of mayhem and mistakes.

I'm glad you said you liked the title because I waffled on it for a while π
Hiiiii Kristi!

HIIIIII Yan!! I always go to your Substack to see if you've picked it back up. Nice to see you!!
And thank you so much for your always kind praises. Are you still writing?
HEYYYY Kristi! wow, I didnt realize someone would actually go back to my substack! haha.
I like to get back to writing TBH, just not sure where I am headed this time.
Pfft. haha. Maybe accountability is what's missing now? lol
I went back to yours because you're here reading mine. Just wanted to see if you'd put anything new out.

Yeah, I'm a bit too structured sometimes and find it hard to be creative if I don't adhere to it, so i'm trying to change it up a bit more.
thanks, I did the free trial with a premium Canva account so I'll do that now! :)
Excellent! I'm looking forward to seeing your new dividers in your next issue!

That's interesting. Boobs are okay but legs are not? I guess a man was behind those laws π
I swear, travel really is an eye opener! You should totally write about it!
This was a very fun read. I was panicked in the middle but loved the way you ended it. Travel does give us the best experiences.
The first time I encountered a open(ish) shower I wore my swimsuit to it.
But a window is scary. Iβd be constantly checking and staring.
I've showered in a swimsuit before too lol. Outdoors. It takes some bravery to get used to.
I'm glad you enjoyed π
Loved reading this! And you're so right: great travel stories almost never come from things going the way you planned.
I'm so glad you (and others) enjoyed this one. I never know if these kind will be appreciated by anyone but myself π
What a great story! I especially loved that you helped out the bartender who was struggling to keep up.
Thank you Tree! I moonlighted as a bartender for many years in the past. It's the least I could do, I know how it feels getting slammed lol.
This is hilarious! Did you ever get an explanation about the purpose for those windows?
Lol not really. I guess it's just the way they build their bathrooms and they aren't shy? I really don't understand the lack of window coverings π

Great post Kristi!
Haha! These are the Turkey stories you haven't shared yet! You should π
I have another entire post written about "no water" issues in Jamaica that I plan to publish down the road. If you know, you know! π
Lol, I definitely know it. And construction was a whole other matter! Bleh!
Great post. Puts me in mind of when the lights on my ancient Land Rover failed while I was driving cross country in the dark in Ecuador, before mobile phones were in use. An interesting experience.

How did you make it out of that situation?
Thanks Jean!
