One Super Unique Way To Earn A Living From Your Favorite Vacation Spot
Anyone can do it from almost anywhere. I did it in cutoffs on the beach in Jamaica.
‘Your Other Passport’ (the section where this post resides) is a set of blueprints filled with bright ideas, actionable advice, and bite-sized tidbits that will teach you how to stop spending money on travel, start earning money on the road, and become widely recognized within your destination of choice, even if the destination is where you currently live.
I was going to call this post, “How to Make an Honest Living by Boxing People.” However, I changed my mind last minute because it sounded a bit violent 😁
A few months back I wrote a post called “This is How You Make An Honest Living Mugging People,” and it flew off the shelves as one of my most popular posts ever. It brought in more paid subscribers than anything I’ve published so far and there wasn’t even even a paywall on it.
It also takes second place for most new subscribers, period. What does this tell us?
It means people WANT new ideas, cool ideas, and possibly a fantastic escape plan idea.
That’s why I’ve published this post as a Wandering Wednesday bonus installment. You can legit steal this idea and run with it…all the way to the Bahamas if you want to. Think of it as a “get out of jail free” card.
This is a bit lengthy to read, however, you’ll come out on the other side with a devilishly unique escape plan, whether you decide to run or not. Maybe you’re happy where you live. So stay home and do this anyway.
Where the idea came from and how I knew it would work:
The inspiration for my little vacation business was two-fold:
I had worked for Hilton (in Canada) for five years and had already seen it done on a much simpler scale.
As a travel writer who had been invited to review countless vacation accommodations in Jamaica over many years, I was shocked that I’d never seen it anywhere there. Especially in upscale vacation properties.
Hilton employees get insane staff rates on hotel rooms worldwide. I used my perks a LOT and moved up to Gold status quickly. Once I reached gold, each time I checked into a hotel I was usually offered a free upgrade and almost always some kind of loyalty treats waiting in my room.
But Hilton treats are lacklustre goodies like cookies or kettle chips. Much appreciated but not earth-shattering.
Enter: My decision to experiment with a more spirited hotel welcome gift.
This was by far one of the most enjoyable R&D (research and development) projects I had ever engaged in.
As a travel writer I’d never once thought about starting a business with physical products. Especially in a foreign country. Just like
and her dog treats, I had NO idea where or how to start but figuring it out was a blast!First came the name. It needed to be catchy and memorable. Something completely native to the island that the tourism industry could latch onto immediately and not forget.
Next, I needed to decide what the welcome gift would actually be. Having a catchy name means nothing if you have a crappy product.
Then I had to figure out how I would package it all into an attractive bundle that would WOW anyone receiving it.
Once I knew how I wanted to package it I needed to find out where the packaging would come from, and then how to source the products that go inside the package.
This is what I came up with and subsequently launched about six months later:
