Looks like a blast... though a bit on the nippy side! We're full-time Arizona sunbirds who morph into RV nomads every summer. It's our escape from the high-octane retiree life—swapping our senior shuffle for leisurely strolls, new adventures, and a whole lot of golf.
RVing might not be everyone's cup of tea, but hey, you get to see some pretty sweet spots around the country!
Ken, your life sounds like my dream. I would LOVE to pack up my dog and hit the road in an RV. Or one of those converted vans. You're doing great things!
And thank you for reading 😊 It's nice to know people are finding my older posts. This is one of my favs.
Last month, I deactivated my FB account and author page. It was depressing me to look at it, but I wasn't entirely sure if I wanted to full out delete. There are a couple family and friends I kept up with through it. I'd have to get some emails and numbers if I eventually opt to delete. I definitely haven't missed it and was glad to miss out on my birthday there as this year was an emotionally hard one due to me now being the same age my brother was when he died of cancer.
Feels pretty freeing, doesn't it? I haven't gone as far as to delete my social media because of "memories." I'm sure you understand, having lost someone significant. But as for usage? I don't bother with social and I don't miss it.
Beautiful landscape! Nature is always underrated although I can understand that when you have little opportunity to enjoy them, at least without spending hours on the road just to get there. Here in Slovakia we are surrounded by nature only a few minutes away. In fact I can go take a walk in a woods just by crossing my back garden. I'm grateful ot have them. They are like a fountain of solace among the crazines of this world.
As for unplugging, I haven't tried it yet, at least not deliberately. But I'm one of those people who never give a f**k of what people think about me, the least in Social Media. I hardly ever take a selfie, though I can understand why many people do.
Happy Birthday! And welcome back to civilisation 😉
Thanks Chris! I totally relate and appreciate your comments. I also live very near to nature living in the suburbs. Isn't it wonderful having it so close by?
Other than to help my daughter during a childcare issue, I haven't left home in quite a long while, thanks to the pandemic, lack of money, etc. I do make the most of my own house, though -- we have one of those ancient clawfoot tubs that we carried out of another house that was being torn down.
This is all 50th birthday goals for me. Cabin with lush amazing smelling bubbles in a stand-alone tub. With Netflix (a romance) hookup and for me I’d add potentially writing a romance 🥰 and eating and drinking fab wine. Having someone else make the amazing food for me or just being close enough to somewhere that does Thai food delivery would work
I'm glad I could inspire you with some 50th goals! Trust me, I could have stayed out there til I turned 51 if I felt like forking over my life savings for it.
May you find all the romance and Thai food you're looking for in life!
I also really cracked up at the “this is 40” comment about people thinking it’s drastically different than 39. I’m 45 and it took a good few years to feel like I was truly owning my 40s. My metabolism pretty much was a good indicator 😂
LOL my metabolism waited til 50 to really kick into slow gear! On top of that, I've had a knee injury all summer long which rendered me immobile for a while, hence...extra poundage!
Great article! I saw it cos you liked my comment about starting from zero, so thought I’d subscribe 😁
Your dog is amazing!
The last time I untethered from the internet was this morning. Although in general I can’t remember the last time I had DAYS away. It’s something I’m trying to work on, as the calmness I feel without looking at my phone is unparalleled. I’d definitely say I’m addicted to checking atm, and I have to consciously resist doing it. The funny thing is, I have to look at a screen to write on my substack blog, irony!
Thank you for subscribing! Ill try to keep you amused.
I think writing is a free pass to be online. For the most part I'm referring to the colossal waste of time that is social media. I abhor it. Although, I find myself pretty wrapped up in "checking" Substack lol. But that's only because it's actually working for me!
PS: Complementing my dog will ALWAYS earn you bonus point in my heart 😂😂 And a new subscriber!
Ah, but we were ridiculously coddled in all of our digs in Kenya — you built your own fires! It was amazing, however, to be away from my laptop for two whole weeks. I thought I'd miss it. Turned out that writing in a journal was perfectly satisfying. BUT -- your birthday sojourn looks absolutely heavenly. As a hearth-hugger myself, the idea of cozying up in a cabin (with a perfect bathtub, a perfect bed, and a perfect dog like Dezi) while snow blankets the world outside -- add coffee and wine, and I'm all about it. Thank you for sharing! I feel like I've been on retreat.
Lol you're right, Dezi is MUCH more interesting to look at than I am! And yes, the deer was a statue, although when she first saw it she froze and barked her head off 😂
And hey, if there are two of us wanting this there has to be more! Let's share this all over the place, round up our new community members and build it! You have a wood chopper already 😂

If I had your house, tree house, and clawfoot tub I'd never leave.
I basically never do.

Well, you kind of had to be coddled or you'd probably be dead because...lions!!
Isn't it lovely to ditch a laptop and use paper once in a while?
Day trips are a great place to start!
I would live in a place like this if such a place existed for people who aren't on vacation.
Yeah same here.

She IS the best, I can vouch for that 😁😁

Amazing!! You're hired!
