YAY on the award! But sounds like meeting this person was the award! Can I admit something... I don't talk about my passion work enough. I work a 9-5 in the medical device industry. I am a manager and my job is ultra demanding. I can't work on my passion work at all during weekdays except on my lunch break. I work from home - but my team and I are very dedicated and get our work done first. When someone asks what I do for a living, I blurt out my day job first. Not enough people know I am a holistic nutrition health coach, or that I am a certified personal trainer and yoga teacher. And my blog... and newsletter. I neeeeed to start talking so I can meet the person like your person to support my work that helps other people in this world. Ok, thanks for letting me rant! Thanks for writing this because you've inspired me to get talkin'!!!
I think that was the best admission EVER!!! Ialso think thousands of people can relate to your struggle!
For instance, before I got the balls to quit my career and go all in with my travel blog (in 2011), I spent YEARS maintaining that travel blog on company time...lunch breaks, coffee breaks, etc. I'd go on my trips and then use the in-between time to actually write my content.
My favourite part of this great essay is when you say that meeting Kirk was even more of an honour than receiving this award. This speaks volumes for your character and is likely why you won in the first place!
Wonderful story. Belated congrats on the award! My best experience was when Randi Mayer Singer was my screenwriting mentor. She co wrote Mrs Doubtfire. My script placed second in a prestigious contest after working with her.
First of all, HUGE congratulations on that award — and darned if that isn't one of the most attractive trophies I've ever seen! And I wouldn't have the huevos to even approach my keyboard were it not for the support, encouragement, honest feedback, and cheerleading from my fellow writers (including you, Ms. Keller).
Jan, I should be the one saying this to YOU. I think you're the only person who reads every word I write on multiple platforms! Everyone should have a Jan Flynn in their corner!!

It's hard to be at work when alllll you want to do is your passion work! I would love to quit one day and go all in!

Agree!!!
Meeting him really was the cake, not the icing. I would trade ALL the awards for all the strangers I've met through travel.

No way!!! Now that's a much more esteemed award than mine was. That's so awesome!
